Setup: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Why This Matters

Setting up MFA takes about two minutes and means your account stays protected even if your password is ever compromised. This guide walks you through enrollment, saving your backup codes, and signing in with MFA active.

Before You Begin

  • You need a smartphone with an authenticator app installed, or a desktop password manager that supports authenticator codes such as 1Password or Bitwarden. If you're not sure what an authenticator app is, read About: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) first.
  • Your account policy must be set to OPTIONAL or ON before you can enroll. If you don't see the option to enroll, contact your account owner.
  • If you are the account owner, you control the policy from Account Settings > MFA Settings

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Go to MFA Settings

Go to the Profile Icon in the top right and select Account Settings Account > MFA Settings. Your current enrollment status and account policy are shown at the top of the page. Click Set up Multi-Factor Authentication to begin.

Step 2: Install an Authenticator App

If you don't already have one, install an authenticator app on your phone. Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy, 1Password, and Bitwarden all work. If you prefer not to use your phone, a desktop password manager like 1Password or Bitwarden can also generate codes on your computer.

Step 3: Scan the QR Code

Open your authenticator app and scan the QR code shown on screen. If you can't scan it, enter the text key displayed below the QR code manually into your app. Once scanned, your app will begin showing a 6-digit code that refreshes every 30 seconds.

Step 4: Enter the 6-Digit Code

Type the current 6-digit code from your authenticator app into the field on screen and click Verify and continue. This confirms your app is linked to your account correctly.

Step 5: Save Your Backup Codes

The system will generate 10 single-use backup codes. These are your safety net if you ever lose access to your phone. Save them somewhere safe now — they are only shown once and cannot be retrieved later. A password manager is the ideal place to store them.

Step 6: Sign In With MFA Active

On your next sign-in, you'll be prompted for your password as usual, then asked for the 6-digit code from your authenticator app. Enter the current code and click Verify.

💡 Check Remember this device at the verification step to skip the code prompt for 30 days on that browser.

Questions and Answers

Q: What if I can't scan the QR code?

A: Below the QR code there is a text key you can enter manually into your authenticator app instead of scanning.

Q: I entered the code but it says it didn't work. What's wrong?

A: The most common cause is your phone's clock being slightly out of sync. Go to your phone's Date and Time settings and make sure Set Automatically is turned on, then try again.

Q: What if I lose my backup codes?

A: As long as you're still signed in, go to My Account > MFA Settings and click Regenerate backup codes to generate a fresh set. This cancels any remaining codes from the previous set, so save the new ones right away.

Q: I got a new phone. What do I do?

A: Go to My Account > MFA Settings and click Replace with a new device. This walks you through scanning a new QR code with your new phone. Do this before wiping or selling your old phone if possible.

Q: What if I'm locked out and have no backup codes?

A: Contact your account owner. They can reset your MFA from Team Settings so you can re-enroll on your next sign-in. If you are the account owner, contact support.
